FUNLAYERS Workshop at the Max Planck Institute of Microstructure Physics, in Halle (Germany)
The FUNLAYERS Workshop will take place at the Max Planck Institute of Microstructure Physics, in Halle (Germany) on October 23-25, 2023. This event is part of the European Project FUNLAYERS – “Functional Layered Materials for Advanced Applications” and will bring together experts to discuss recent developments and future directions in the broad area of emergent properties of heterostructures. Specifically, the workshop will focus on two topics:
Topic 1: Emergent phenomena such as topological superconductivity that arise at the interfaces between distinct materials, control of the electronic properties of heterostructures via strain, curvature, and piezoelectricity, and the interplay between geometric chirality and spin chirality.
Topic 2: Recent developments and future perspectives for layered materials for energy applications. This includes improving our understanding of the physical and chemical processes that arise during electrochemical ion insertion and exfoliation, the functionality of two-dimensional organic filters, ion dynamics in novel liquid electrolytes for next-generation battery concepts, and on-water surface synthesis.
The workshop will include lectures by experts on the two broad topical themes, as well as ample time for discussion. A lab tour will be organised to showcase the MPI-MSP experimental research facilities. For students practical demonstrations of our advanced deposition (large MBE/sputtering/PLD cluster,...) and characterisation systems (TEM, RBS…) are planned. A poster session will also take place.
